Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC)
Professional bus, coach and lorry drivers are legally required to hold a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) in addition to their vocational driving licence. Driver CPC training is continuing professional development which carries on throughout a professional bus, coach or lorry driver's career.
The aims of Driver CPC are to:
- Improve the knowledge and skills of lorry, bus and coach drivers before they start driving professionally
- Develop their knowledge and skills throughout their working life
- Improve road safety through better qualified drivers
Existing drivers
All professional Category D, D1, D+E, D1E (Bus and Coach drivers) are required to undertake 35 hours of periodic training in every five year period. This started 10th. September 2008, and must be completed by 9th. September 2013.
Also, all professional Cat. C, C1, C+E, C1E (LGV drivers) are also required to undertake 35 hours of periodic training in every 5 year period. For LGV Drivers this periodic training requirement started a year later in September 2009, and must be completed by 9th. September 2014.

New drivers

Periodic Training is regulated in line with the requirements of the Directive. Only training centres that have been approved can deliver Periodic Training and all individual courses must also be approved. In the UK, the approving body is the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT). All completed training will be registered on a driver database, enabling DVLA to issue Driver Qualification Cards to drivers who complete their training requirements
Both new and existing drivers must complete a total of 35 hours Periodic Training within the 5 years following their ‘acquired rights’ or initial Driver CPC to keep their Driver CPC valid. Ultimately, it is the driver’s responsibility to decide if this directive is applicable to them but we can advise fully in this regard. Just contact us and we will let you know what you will have to do and within what timescale.
